Introduction

An editorial retelling of the frame narrative — the sage Valmiki and the wandering sage Narada. No verse is quoted here.

Simple explanation

The Ramayana is traditionally framed by a conversation. One sage asks another who among the living is truly virtuous, and that single question opens the door to the entire epic.

Context

The setting is a forest hermitage. The purpose of the conversation, in the traditional arrangement, is to establish the qualities of the hero before the narrative of his life begins.

Key insight

A question can carry as much meaning as an answer.

Reflection

What question has opened a new path of understanding for you?
